Russell Redding, Pennsylvania Agricultural Secretary, closed out 2022 by releasing guidance for siting grid-scale solar panels on farms and rural communities in the Commonwealth. The stated goal of the guidance is to inform “decisions by landowners, investors, planners and government officials in considering the planning and siting of grid-scale solar systems,” with the intent “to balance and promote the goals of sustainable income-generation and protection of water, soil and valuable agricultural land resources.” The guidance, which can be found here, includes an overview of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s support of revenue-generating opportunities of farmers and landowners, without compromising food and fiber production. The guidance also includes bullet points laying out sustainable siting considerations for solar panels as well as frequently asked questions for farmland owners.
